Competing in four sports at Eau Claire from 1980 to 1984, Sheild holds the honor as the only athlete, male or female, at UWEC to become a four-sport All-American which she accomplished in swimming, cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Her athletic career highlights include setting the NAIA 3,000-meter outdoor record her junior year; finishing third at the national cross country championships her junior year; placing second as part of the national 800-yard freestyle relay team her freshman year; and placing sixth at the national indoor 2-mile event her junior year. Sheild was selected as Female Athlete of the Year by the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram in 1983. A native of Madison, Sheild graduated from La Follette High School in 1980. An Academic All-American and WWIAC Scholar-Athlete while at UWEC, at the time of her induction Sheild was pursuing a master's degree in marine biology at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
