Stan Johnson was the premier Blugold basketball player of the mid-1960s, performing under Hall of Fame coach Bill Zorn.  Because he transferred after two years at the University of Montana, he was only eligible for the final 11 games of the 1964-65 season but scored 225 points for a 20.4 average. In 1965-66, he set a single season record by averaging 28.1 points per game during a 20-game schedule. As a senior, Johnson averaged 27.7 points per game and led the conference with a 26.9 average. He was named the Most Valuable Player in the conference that season in helping the Blugolds to a runner-up finish behind champion Oshkosh. Despite playing in just 52 games during his career, Johnson scored 1,369 points and produced a school record career average of 26.3. At one time, he held the Blugold single game scoring record with 43, set against Bethel in 1965. A guard-forward, Johnson was a two-time All-Conference, All-District and NAIA All-America Honorable Mention selection. He was UWEC’s Conference Scholar-Athlete in 1967 and was named the Eau Claire City Athlete of the Year in 1967 by the Leader-Telegram. Johnson played one year of baseball in a Blugold uniform but skipped his final two seasons to concentrate on his studies for which he was awarded a scholarship to UW-Madison for graduate work in accounting.  In 1968, he began a long teaching career at UW-Stout.
