UWEC Athletics Hall of Fame
Joan Schalk was a Blugold diver from 1973 to 1977 and competed on the gymnastics team during the 1975-76 season. She competed in every diving meet during her four years at UWEC and competed at the intermediate level in gymnastics. As a diver, she placed in the top five at the conference meet all four years with her highest place being third both her freshman and sophomore years. Schalk is a 1972 graduate of Menomonee Falls High School and graduated cum laude from UWEC in 1977. Schalk coached diving, gymnastics and track and field at Hudson High School from 1977 to 1979 and girls and boys diving from 1979 to 1980 at Menomonee Falls North High School. She has also coached girls diving from 1982 to 1985 and boys diving from 1983 to 1985 at Wauwatosa West High School before directing the girls diving team from 1986 to 1987 at Menomonee Falls High School. One of Schalk's divers won the Wisconsin girls state diving title and achieved national All-American honors in 1987. At the time of her induction, Schalk was a project manager of Application Software Development for J.C. Penney Co., in Dallas, Texas, where she is a master diver on the national and international levels. She has been honored as an All-American every year since 1981 and developed a masters diving team in Dallas. She has also been actively involved on various United States diving committees for the promotion of both age group and masters diving. Schalk also assists in planning and coordinating diving meets in the Dallas area and was to be meet director of the 1990 National Diving Championships to be held in Dallas.
