UWEC Athletics Hall of Fame
Cheryl Brefka competed for the Blugold swim team during the 1972-73 and 1973-74 seasons. She was one of the pioneers of the Blugold swim program which began in 1970 and developed into a conference and national powerhouse. As a freshman, Brefka set two state swim records in the backstroke. She captured the 50-yard backstroke and the 100-yard backstroke titles in record time at the 1972 WWIAC meet. Brefka was also a team captain in 1973. A native of Racine, Brefka is a 1972 graduate of Washington Park High School. She earned her bachelor's degree from UWEC in 1977. At the time of her induction, she was an advisory marketing representative for IBM in Tampa, Florida and a mother of three.
