UWEC Athletics Hall of Fame
Chippewa Falls native Bob Morgan ranks as one the top basketball scorers in UWEC school history. Morgan, a guard, started 89 consecutives and scored 1,535 points (17.2 ppg) during his career from 1954-58. He played on two of the greatest teams coached by Bill Zorn. The Blugolds won the conference championship with an 11-1 mark and finished 20-2 in 1954-55. They lost by two points to Beloit in the NAIA District 14 playoffs. The following year, the Blugolds shared the conference title with Platteville, then beat Beloit to advance to the NAIA Nationals in Kansas City. There, they beat Portland Sate in the first round but lost in the second round by one point to Tennessee A&I, which went on to win three consecutive titles from 1957 through 1959 as Tennessee State. Morgan captained the team his senior year and also was named All-Conference.
At the time of his induction, Morgan had been head basketball coach at Janesville Parker for 11 years after an outstanding five-year stint at Winneconne where he posted an 83-19 record and four years at Greenfield. At Parker, he won a state championship in 1971 and placed fourth the following year. His 1971 team was a Cinderella team as "it won 17 of its final 19 games after starting out the season with a 2-5 record. They defeated unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Neenah in the semifinals and Milwaukee Rufus King in the finals. Morgan was named Madison Area and UPI State Coach of the Year in 1971 and also was selected Madison Area Sportsman of the Year. Morgan has also served for a number of years as an officer with the Wisconsin High School Coaches Association.
