As a 5-10, 191-pound junior, Hanson was named an All-Conference offensive guard for the Blugolds in 1969. He repeated that honor as a senior when he also served as captain and earned team MVP honors. Following graduation in 1972, Hanson became a Public Health Sanitarian for the Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services in Rhinelander. Between 1977 and 1985, the Ashland native was an estimator, soil tester and plumbing designer for Devereaux, Inc. Plumbing and Heating in Rhinelander. In 1985, he returned to the Department of Health and Social Services as a Public Health Sanitarian in Eau Claire. At the time of his induction, he had just taken a job as Water Supply Specialist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in the Eau Claire area office. Hanson has served as Vice Present of the Wisconsin Environmental Health Association and on the Council for Food Protection Practices. He has also been involved on the Board of Directors for First Wisconsin Chapter, Muskies, Inc.
