UWEC Athletics Hall of Fame
Hugh Horswill, who grew up on a farm near Withee and went to high school in Neillsville, played football for four years under Bill Zorn, serving as captain of the 1938 team his senior year. He became known as "Ironman" for playing every minute of all seven games during the 1937 season. He was named to the All-Conference Second Team on defense that year. He earned First Team defensive honors as a tackle and Second Team offensive honors his senior year. Following his graduation from UWEC in 1939, Horswill spent 40 years in public service before retiring in 1979. The final 33 years were spent in Janesville. There he was a teacher and coach of football, basketball and track; spent 12 years as assistant principal and then 12 years as principal at Janesville Parker High School. He served as head coach in all sports in his first four years out of college at Granton, Alma Center and Osceola. During his three years in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, he served in the European theater as an instructor, in combat intelligence and in physical education. He was a charter member of the Janesville Education Association. He served as executive secretary of the Big 8 Athletic Conference from 1981 to 1986 and was a member of the Janesville School Board from 1984-87.
