UWEC Athletics Hall of Fame
Sam Young was a standout lineman at UWEC but also played basketball and baseball in the late 1940s. Young was captain of the Ade Olson-coached 1948 conference championship football team. He was an All-Conference lineman as both a junior and a senior. After graduation, Young served at Black River Falls High School, holding the positions of coach and Assistant Principal. In 27 years as basketball coach, he compiled a 353-210 record and in 23 years as football coach, he had a 123-59-6 record. He also coached baseball and golf at one time. Young served a term as president of the Wisconsin High School Coaches Association and served on the rules advisory committee for the WIAA. He also was widely known and respected as a college and high school basketball, football and baseball official.
