MADISON, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's tennis team produced a singles champion and doubles champion at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship on Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Anna Lee (So. – Buffalo, Minn.) earned the second singles conference title of her career by winning the No. 3 flight, and she and
Liv Herzog (So. – Owatonna, Minn.) teamed up to win the No. 3 doubles title.
The Blugolds finished as the conference runner-up in the team standings. The Blugolds earned 18 points to finish three behind WIAC champion UW-Whitewater.
Lee won the No. 4 singles title as a freshman last fall, and remained a conference champion by taking the No. 3 title this year. She won 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals, and defeated UW-Whitewater's Kellie Ha 3-6, 6-4 (10-4) in the finals to earn the crown.
In doubles, Lee and Herzog defeated UW-Oshkosh's Kayla Gibbs and Jameson Gregory 8-1 to win the No. 3 championship. It was the first doubles conference championship for either player. They had advanced to the championship match by winning twice on Saturday.
Herzog was also the runner-up at No. 5 singles. She won 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals before falling 7-5, 6-1 to UW-Whitewater's Alex Repplier in the finals.
Samantha Fuchs (Jr. – DeForest, Wis.) was the runner-up at No. 2 singles. She won her semifinal match 6-0, 6-2, but fell in the finals 6-3, 6-1 to UW-Whitewater's Gracie Ha.
UW-Eau Claire also had five third-place finishes.
Clare Palen (Sr. – Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) took third at No. 1 singles, winning the third-place match 6-0, 6-1 over UW-Stevens Point's Tristin Jantz.
Sydney Presler (Sr. – Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) finished third at No. 4 singles. She won the third-place match 6-0, 6-1 over UW-Oshkosh's Jameson Gregory.
Morgan Dekan (Jr. – Altoona, Wis.) took third in the No. 6 singles flight. She defeated UW-Oshkosh's Hannah Stitt 6-0, 6-1 to finish third.
In doubles, Palen and Fuchs teamed up to win the No. 1 third-place match 8-3 over UW-Stevens Point's Jantz and Jordan Scharf. Dekan and Presler took third at No. 2, beating UW-Stevens Point's Quinlyn Mack and Chloe Leithold 8-3 in the third-place match.
Presler was named the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete, and Dekan was selected to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship team.
