DAVENPORT, Fla. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire fell to SUNY Purchase, 8–7, in a closely contested game on Sunday. The Blugolds held a 7–0 lead through six innings before SUNY Purchase rallied with eight runs in the final three frames.
SUNY Purchase seized momentum in the eighth inning with a sequence of defensive miscues and timely hitting. A pair of errors allowed two runners to reach, and a ground-rule double by Michael Pagano brought in a crucial run, while another single scored two runs. This offensive burst put the Panthers ahead, creating a lead that UW-Eau Claire could not overcome.
Earlier, UW-Eau Claire built a strong position in the second inning, ignited by
Diego Caicedo's two-run double.
Austin Curti and
Ian George followed with key singles, setting the stage for a five-run outburst that capitalized on an error and a productive groundout. In the eighth, Caicedo added another RBI with a double, closing the gap to one run.
In the ninth inning, UWEC applied pressure with
Cole Clausen drawing a walk and advancing to third. However, the final threat ended with a groundout, leaving the potential tying run stranded. Despite the early lead and late rally, the Blugolds fell short in a tightly contested matchup.
Nicholas Meuser delivered a strong performance, pitching 4 innings without allowing an earned run, giving up just one hit and striking out three, maintaining a WHIP of 1.00. Sebastian De la Toba followed with 2 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on one hit with three strikeouts and a WHIP of 0.95.
Joey Ernster faced challenges, giving up three earned runs without recording an out, while
Chase Watkins allowed four runs in 1 inning, contributing to the game's conclusion.
Cooper Senne closed the game with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, yielding one hit and maintaining a WHIP of 0.83.
Caicedo led the offense with three hits and three RBIs, including three doubles, contributing significantly to the scoring. Meuser excelled on the mound, pitching four innings without allowing an earned run, while striking out three and giving up just one hit. George added to the team's tally by scoring two runs and collecting two hits.
Eli Keirstead supported the lineup with one hit and one RBI, also managing to score a run himself.
