EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team swept UW-River Falls in its season finale on Saturday at Carson Park. The Blugolds won the first game 2-1 before
Carter Vieth (Fr. - Elk Mound, Wis.) ended the season on a high note with a walk-off homer in a 3-2 victory in Game 2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds (11-29, 4-24) won four of their final five games to close out the season.
- A pitcher's duel in Game 1 saw Brennan Cohen (Sr. - Vestavia Hills, Ala.) pitch eight scoreless frames against the Falcons.
- Will Johnson (Fr. - Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) hit a two-RBI double in the eighth to break a scoreless tie, putting the Blugolds ahead 2-0. The Falcons answered with a run in the ninth, but Tyler Webb (Fr. - Strum, Wis./Eleva-Strum) slammed the door to earn the save.
- Cohen struck out three across his eight innings.
- UW-Eau Claire got another standout start from Evan Fischer (Fr. - White Bear Lake, Minn./Roseville) threw 7.1 innings and held the Falcons to two runs. He struck out three.
- Chase Watkins (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) earned the win with 2.2 scoreless innings of work.
- Logan Hesselman (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) hit an RBI double in the fourth to tie the game 1-1. A solo homer for the Falcons in the seventh gave UW-River Falls a 2-1 lead, but the Blugolds tied the game in the bottom of the ninth when Johnson scored.
- Vieth ended the season in dramatic fashion, blasting a walk-off, solo home run in the bottom of the 10th.
- Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) and Hesselman finished with two hits apiece.
- UW-Eau Claire recognized nine seniors with a Senior Day ceremony: Jameson Bender, Cohen, Dustan Green, Cole Hinkel, Cade Mueller, Ethan Plantz, Salyers, Ben Teigland and Carson Windeshausen.
