Blugolds split with Falcons in first meeting since 1995

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team split a doubleheader with UW-River Falls on Friday at Carson Park, marking the first meeting between the two programs since 1995. The Blugolds won 13-3 in seven innings while the Falcons won Game 2 9-2.

The Blugolds and Falcons did not have baseball programs for most of the 2000s. UW-Eau Claire's was re-established beginning in 2021 and the Falcons are in their first season back after dropping their program more than 20 years ago.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blugolds (9-29, 2-24) hammered 17 hits in the Game 1 victory.
  • A three-run second inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Will Johnson (Fr. - Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest), put the Blugolds ahead 4-1.
  • The Blugolds broke things open with a six-run fourth. Johnson added another RBI double and Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) hit a two-run homer to highlight the frame. Three other Blugolds had RBI singles in the inning.
  • RBI singles from Austin Curti (Fr. - River Falls, Wis.) and Carter Vieth (Fr. - Elk Mound, Wis.) in the fifth and seventh, respectively ended the game via 10-run rule.
  • Nicholas Meuser (So. - Burnsville, Minn.) pitched a complete game for UW-Eau Claire. He held the Falcons to three runs while striking out six.
  • Austin Buck (Jr. - Afton, Minn./Stillwater) had a 4-for-5 showing in Game 1. Six different players had multi-hit games.
  • Salyers hit a solo homer in the second inning of Game 2, but UW-River Falls took over from there. The Falcons took the lead in the fourth inning and padded it late in the game, scoring five times across the final two frames.
  • Buck was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth to account for UW-Eau Claire's only other run.

UP NEXT

The Blugolds wrap up their season with another doubleheader against the Falcons on Saturday, May 3. The team will host Senior Day and Alumni Day. The doubleheader begins at 12 p.m. at Carson Park.
