STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped a twin bill at UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday. The Blugolds fell to the Pointers 12-4 and 8-1 at Zimmermann Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After falling behind 2-0 early in Game 1, the Blugolds (6-15, 0-10) responded with a sacrifice fly by Brayton Thillman (So. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) and an RBI single by Jack Eustice (Fr. - Rochester, Minn./Century) in the top of the second to tie the game.
- The Pointers (9-11, 5-5) regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the second before breaking the game open with six more in the third. They hit two RBI doubles in the frame.
- Diego Caicedo (Sr. - Pompano Beach, Fla./Northeast) delivered an RBI apiece in the fourth and sixth innings, but that was all the offense the Blugolds could muster.
- Eustice finished with two hits in Game 1. Aaron Skrypek (Jr. - Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) turned in a standout relief effort on the mound, striking out seven across six innings. He held the Pointers to two earned runs.
- UW-Stevens Point led 4-0 by the end of the third inning in Game 2. UW-Eau Claire cut the deficit to 4-1 when Austin Curti (Fr. - River Falls, Wis.) grounded out for an RBI in the sixth, but the Pointers responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. A three-run homer capped the scoring.
- Tapio Niemioja (Fr. - Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) started on the mound in Game 2 and worked 4.1 innings. He surrendered four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two.

UW-Eau Claire is back at home this weekend, hosting UW-Oshkosh for a four-game WIAC series on April 12-13. The doubleheaders begin at 12 p.m. each day at Carson Park.
