EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to UW-Stout on Saturday at Carson Park. The Blugolds, playing at home for the first time this season, fell to the Blue Devils 5-3 and 17-6 (8 inn.).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game 1 featured a pitcher's duel between Nicholas Meuser (So. - Burnsville, Minn.) of the Blugolds (6-11, 0-6) and Drew Buss of the Blue Devils (4-12, 2-4). The two starters combined for 15 strikeouts and only two walks.
- The Blue Devils took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth, and tacked on two more runs in the sixth. The Blugolds got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) scored on a passed ball and Logan Hesselman (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) added an RBI single to make it 4-2.
- UW-Stout hit a solo homer for an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Jack Eustice (Fr. - Rochester, Minn./Century) hit a sacrifice fly to pull a run back in the bottom of the frame, but the Blugolds couldn't get any closer.
- Meuser's line finished with 6.1 innings pitched, seven strikeouts, one walk and five runs allowed. Tapio Niemioja (Fr. - Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
- While Game 1 was a pitcher's duel, Game 2 was a slugfest. The Blue Devils hit four home runs, accounting for seven of their 17 runs.
- UW-Stout led 5-4 before breaking the game open with a five-run fifth inning. The outburst started with a three-run homer, and by the time it was done, the Blugolds trailed 13-4.
- The Blugolds scored two runs in the sixth, highlighted by an RBI double from Austin Buck (Jr. - Afton, Minn./Stillwater), but the deficit was too large to overcome.
- Salyers had three hits in Game 2. Hesselman and Eustice added two apiece.
