EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire softball team split a doubleheader with UW-Platteville on Saturday at Bollinger Fields. The Blugolds lost the first game 5-2 but took the second in walk-off fashion, winning 7-6 in eight innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game 1 saw UW-Platteville put five runs on the board in the third inning, and the Blugolds couldn't recover. Three errors led to four unearned runs in the frame.
- Molly Marquardt (So. - Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) grounded out for an RBI in the sixth and Claire Beck (Sr. - Jefferson, Wis.) added an RBI single, but UW-Eau Claire didn't get any closer.
- Beck finished with two hits to lead the lineup. Lauren Trottier (So. - Burlington, Wis./Elkhorn) pitched five innings and allowed one earned run.
- The Blugolds used a late comeback to capture Game 2. They led 4-3 entering the sixth, but UW-Platteville scored three times in the top of the frame to pull ahead 6-4.
- A run-scoring single from Brooklyn Swanepoel (Fr. - New Richmond, Wis.) made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh, and the Blugolds forced extra innings when she later scored on an error.
- The Blugolds won the game in the bottom of the eighth when Kenna Strunsee (Sr. - Waukesha, Wis./South) dropped a squeeze bunt to score Miranda Gernander (So. - Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) for the walk-off victory.
- Strunsee led the team with three hits in Game 2. Trottier pitched 5.1 innings of one-run softball.
