PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team split a doubleheader with UW-Platteville on Saturday at Kendall Murray Field, earning its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) victory of the season. The Blugolds dropped the first game 6-4 but responded with a 9-8 victory in Game 2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A two-run homer in the fourth inning of Game 1 gave UW-Platteville the lead for good in the opener. The Blugolds tried to mount a rally late, but couldn't pull it off.
- A two-run seventh inning by the Blugolds cut the deficit to one run at 5-4, but they never got any closer. A Pioneers solo homer in the bottom half of the inning completed the scoring.
- Austin Curti (Fr. - River Falls, Wis.) had a big performance in the first game, knocking three hits from the leadoff spot. Cole Clausen (Jr. - Prior Lake, Minn.) added two of his own.
- Brennan Cohen (Sr. - Vestavia Hills, Ala.) struck out seven in five innings on the mound.
- The Pioneers led 3-0 in Game 2 before the Blugolds responded. A four-run fourth, highlighted by RBI singles from Clausen and Logan Hesselman (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) gave UW-Eau Claire a 4-3 lead.
- The Blugolds trailed 5-4 entering the sixth, where Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) hit a two-RBI double to give UW-Eau Claire the lead. Salyers and Buck added two more RBI doubles in the seventh to make it a 9-5 lead.
- The Pioneers scored once in the seventh and twice in the ninth, but Sebastian De La Toba (Jr. - Chula Vista, Calif./Olympian) slammed the door to earn the save.
- Nicholas Meuser (So. - Burnsville, Minn.) picked up the win on the mound. He threw 5.1 innings and struck out four.
- Salyers, Hesselman and Carter Vieth (Fr. - Elk Mound, Wis.) had three hits to lead the lineup.
