PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team lost the final two games of a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) series against UW-Platteville on Sunday at Kendall Murray Field. The Blugolds fell 5-4 in both games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Eau Claire lost a late lead in Game 1, and couldn't complete a comeback attempt in Game 2.
- The Blugolds scored four times in the late stages of Game 1 to build a 4-0 lead. Cole Clausen (Jr. - Prior Lake, Minn.) hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth before Carter Vieth (Fr. - Elk Mound, Wis.) and Will Johnson (Fr. - Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) added RBI doubles in the seventh.
- UW-Eau Claire maintained that four-run lead entering the bottom of the ninth, but the Pioneers rallied to win in walk-off fashion. A two-run homer started the rally before they later won on a walk-off single.
- The Pioneers' rally left starter Evan Fisher (Fr. - White Bear Lake, Minn./Roseville) with a no-decision despite a standout day. He threw 8.1 innings and struck out eight. He allowed just two runs.
- Vieth had two hits to pace the offense.
- UW-Platteville got out to a 3-0 lead through two innings in Game 2. Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) tallied RBIs in the fourth and sixth innings to make it a one-run game, but the Pioneers padded their advantage with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
- Trailing 5-2, UW-Eau Claire again slashed the deficit to one when Vieth scored on a wild pitch and Thomas Beardman (So. - Gurnee, Ill./Warrens Township) hit an RBI double in the seventh. The Blugolds couldn't get any closer.
- Johnson, Salyers and Austin Buck (Jr. - Afton, Minn./Stillwater) had two hits each. Chase Watkins (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) threw three scoreless relief innings.
