Marquardt breaks doubles record as Blugolds sweep UW-Superior

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire softball team swept a doubleheader against UW-Superior 16-1 (5 innings) and 7-2 on Wednesday at Bollinger Fields. Molly Marquardt (So. - Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) broke UW-Eau Claire's single season record by hitting her 18th double of the season to power the sweep of the Yellowjackets.

The previous single-season record was 17 doubles, set in 1997 by Jill Schoenike. Just a sophomore, Marquardt already ranks just outside the top 10 on the Blugolds' career doubles leaderboard with 28 to her credit.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UW-Eau Claire (24-10) had four innings in which it scored four-plus runs across the doubleheader.
  • The fireworks began in the bottom of the first of Game 1, where the Blugolds scored five times. Marquardt hit a two-RBI double and Emmy Olson (Fr. - Onalaska, Wis.) added a bases-clearing triple later in the frame.
  • The Blugolds scored five more times in the second, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Olson.
  • UW-Eau Claire tacked on four more runs in the third, including a two-RBI double by Siri Springer (So. - Circle Pines, Minn./Mounds Park Academy).
  • Two more runs in the fifth ended the game early.
  • Jacie Schultz (Sr. - Lake Crystal, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial) pitched three innings to earn the win. She struck out four.
  • Paige Lathrop (Jr. - South Milwaukee, Wis.), Hailey Hagedorn (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) and Olson all had three hits.
  • The Blugolds broke open Game 2 with four runs in the third. Lathrop, Hagedorn and Ava Kozlovsky (Fr. - Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) all had run-scoring hits in the inning.
  • The Yellowjackets pulled a run back in the fourth, but RBI singles from Lathrop and Hagedorn in the fourth and fifth, respectively, helped the Blugolds put the game away.
  • Lauren Trottier (So. - Burlington, Wis./Elkhorn) picked up the win in the circle by working 5.1 innings. She struck out three.
  • Lathrop had four hits in Game 2 and finished the day with seven in total.
