EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday at Carson Park. The Blugolds dropped the first game 8-6 in 10 innings and the second 10-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds (6-25, 0-20) gave the Pointers (15-16, 10-10) all they could handle in Game 1. They led entering the ninth inning before UW-Stevens Point rallied to force extras.
- UW-Eau Claire trailed until Diego Caicedo (Sr. - Pompano Beach, Fla./Northeast) blasted a two-run homer to right field to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth.
- Austin Buck (Jr. - Afton, Minn./Stillwater) put the Blugolds ahead with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, and Logan Hesselman (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) added an RBI single later in the frame to make it 5-3.
- UW-Stevens Point pulled a run back in the eighth before later taking the lead on a two-RBI single in the ninth.
- Facing their final three outs, the Blugolds rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Hesselman delivered a run-scoring single to tie the game 6-6 and force extra innings.
- In the 10th, the Pointers used a two-run homer to pull ahead for good.
- The loss soured a standout start from Sebastian De La Toba (Jr. - Chula Vista, Calif./Olympian) on the mound. The right-hander worked 7.2 innings and held the Pointers to one earned run. He struck out five.
- Caicedo finished with three hits. Buck and Hesselman had two each.
- A pair of two-run homers early in Game 2 helped the Pointers build a 7-0 lead and the Blugolds couldn't recover.
- The Blugolds scored on an error in the fifth and added two more runs on bases-loaded walks by Jack Eustice (Fr. - Rochester, Minn./Century) and Caicedo in the seventh. But it couldn't negate two more homers from the Pointers.
- Cole Clausen (Jr. - Prior Lake, Minn.) had two hits to lead the lineup.
