EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire softball team split a doubleheader with UW-Stout on Tuesday at Bollinger Fields. The Blugolds dropped the first game 9-6 before winning the second 15-1 in five innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The games were originally scheduled to be played in Menomonie but were relocated to Eau Claire. UW-Stout (11-17, 2-4) was the home team in both contests.
- UW-Eau Claire (22-10, 4-4) led after four and a half innings in Game 1, but a five-run bottom of the fifth made the difference for the Blue Devils. A two-RBI double tied the game before a two-RBI single gave UW-Stout the lead for good.
- Hailey Hagedorn (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) and Megan Patterson (Sr. - Johnsburg, Ill.) had both hit RBI doubles in the third to put UW-Eau Claire up 3-1. The Blue Devils answered with two runs in the fourth to tie it before Molly Marquardt (So. - Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) and Claire Beck (Sr. - Jefferson, Wis.) tallied RBIs in the fifth to make it 5-3 in UW-Eau Claire's favor.
- After the Blue Devils' five-run outburst, the Blugolds could only pull one back. Hagedorn hit an RBI single in the seventh.
- Hagedorn and Kenna Strunsee (Sr. - Waukesha, Wis./South) had two hits each in the first game.
- In Game 2, the Blugolds bounced back in a big way. Jacie Schultz (Sr. - Lake Crystal, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial) pitched a complete game four-hitter, and the Blugold lineup pounded 17 hits to score 15 runs.
- UW-Eau Claire scored six times in both the third and fifth innings. Beck and Brooklyn Swanepoel (Fr. - New Richmond, Wis.) both hit two-RBI singles in the third.
- Hagedorn hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run fourth for the Blugolds. Beck added a grand slam in the fifth.
- Strunsee finished 4-for-5 in Game 2. Swanepoel added three hits. Six different Blugolds had multi-hit games.
- Schultz struck out five across five innings in the circle.
