Blugolds earn first win at Whitewater since 2015, split with No. 20 Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire softball team split a doubleheader with No. 20 UW-Whitewater on Saturday, earning its first win at Whitewater since 2015 in the process. The Blugolds dropped the first game 4-1 but bounced back with a 3-0 victory in the second, snapping a 14-game losing streak to the Warhawks. It was their first win over UW-Whitewater overall since 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UW-Whitewater (23-5, 2-2) did all of its scoring in the first three innings of Game 1. The Warhawks were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the first, and added run-scoring singles in the second and third. They also scored on an error in the third.
  • UW-Eau Claire (21-9, 3-3) got one back when Hailey Hagedorn (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. The Blugolds couldn't get any closer though.
  • Paige Lathrop (Jr. - South Milwaukee, Wis.), Molly Marquardt (So. - Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) and Norah Kutnink (So. - Winneconne, Wis.) all had two hits in Game 1.
  • The Blugolds rode a complete game shutout from Jacie Schultz (Sr. - Lake Crystal, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial) in Game 2. She shut out the 20th-ranked team in the country, holding the Warhawks to six hits while striking out two and walking one.
  • UW-Eau Claire took the lead in the fifth inning, when Marquardt hit an RBI double and Claire Beck (Sr. - Jefferson, Wis.) added an RBI single. The Blugolds polished off the victory with a solo homer from Marquardt in the seventh.
  • Beck went 3-for-4 in Game 2. Marquardt finished 2-for-4, and Kutnink added two more hits.
