Blugolds battle, but fall to No. 10 UW-La Crosse twice

LA CROSSE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped the final two games of a four-game set against No. 10 UW-La Crosse 5-3 and 9-1 on Saturday at Copeland Park. The Blugolds led the Eagles midway through Game 1, but couldn't hold on and later dropped the series finale too.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UW-Eau Claire (6-23, 0-18) built a 3-1 lead through four and a half innings in Game 1. Jack Eustice (Fr. - Rochester, Minn./Century) hit into a fielder's choice for an RBI and Austin Curti (Fr. - River Falls, Wis.) added an RBI single in the top of the fifth to put the Blugolds ahead by two.
  • The Eagles (24-6, 14-4) pulled one run back in the sixth before plating three runs in the seventh to go ahead for good. They went in front on a two-out, two-RBI single.
  • Nicholas Meuser (So. - Burnsville, Minn.) turned in another solid start on the mound. After throwing nine scoreless innings against UW-Oshkosh last week, he logged 6.2 against the Eagles. He surrendered four runs and struck out three.
  • The Blugolds also led in Game 2. Dustan Green (Sr. - Prior Lake, Minn.) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning to put UW-Eau Claire up 1-0.
  • The Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back. They scored five runs across the final two innings to pull away.
  • UW-Eau Claire was limited to two hits in Game 2.
