DAVENPORT, Fla. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team split a pair of games at the RussMatt Invitational on Friday at Northeast Regional Park. The Blugolds outlasted St. Norbert College 3-1 in 13 innings before falling to the College of Wooster 5-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds (5-5) were locked in a low-scoring affair with the Green Knights in the first game of the day. St. Norbert scored a run in the first inning, but neither team crossed the plate again until the eighth.
- Logan Hesselman (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) hit a game-tying RBI single in the eighth inning, and the game went to extras after neither side scored in the ninth.
- Both pitching staffs held the opposition scoreless until Carter Vieth (Fr. - Elk Mound, Wis.) blasted a go-ahead, two-run home run in the top of the 13th inning for the Blugolds.
- Sebastian De La Toba (Jr. - Chula Vista, Calif./Olympian) had a masterful appearance out of the bullpen. He held the Green Knights scoreless for eight innings and picked up his second win of the season. He struck out five and held St. Norbert to three hits.
- Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) tied the program record with seven at-bats against St. Norbert.
- The Blugolds led most of the game against Wooster. Cole Clausen (Jr. - Prior Lake, Minn.) hit a two-RBI double in the top of the first, and Hesselman followed with an RBI double of his own to put UW-Eau Claire ahead 3-0.
- The Blugolds led 3-2 until the sixth. They scored on a passed ball in the top half of the inning, but Wooster answered with two runs in the bottom half to tie the game at 4.
- Wooster scored the winning run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh.
- Hesselman finished with three hits for the Blugolds in Game 2.
- Tyler Webb (Fr. - Strum, Wis./Eleva-Strum) started on the mound and pitched six effective innings. He held Wooster to three earned runs and struck out seven.
