DAVENPORT, Fla. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team fell to William Paterson 13-5 on Thursday at the RussMatt Invitational. A four-run third inning helped the Pioneers break the game open, and the Blugolds couldn't recover.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Eau Claire (4-4) took an early lead when John DiGregorio (Fr. - Westfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) hit a two-run homer in the top of the first.
- William Paterson (12-4) pulled a run back in the bottom of the second before pulling ahead with its four-run third. The Pioneers added two more runs in the fourth and scored once each in the fifth, sixth and seventh. They scored three times in the eighth.
- Trailing by nine in the ninth, the Blugolds got a sacrifice fly from Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) but couldn't muster any more offense.
- Salyers led UW-Eau Claire with a 3-for-4 performance. He hit two doubles and scored two runs.
- Logan Hesselman (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) also hit two doubles. DiGregorio finished 2 for 2.
- Brennan Cohen (Sr. - Vestavia Hills, Ala.) started on the mound and worked 3.2 innings. Chase Watkins (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) struck out five across three innings of relief in his second career appearance.
UP NEXT
The Blugolds play two games at the tournament on Friday, March 21. They take on St. Norbert College at 9:30 a.m. Eastern before playing Wooster at 1 p.m. Eastern. Both games are at Northeast Regional Park.
