DAVENPORT, Fla. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team opened up its stint at the 2025 RussMatt Invitational with a 17-8 victory over Fredonia on Wednesday at Northeast Regional Park.
Carter Vieth (Fr. - Elk Mound, Wis.) set a new program record with four doubles in the victory. His performance also tied the record for most doubles in a single game by a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vieth went 4 for 5 with five RBIs in his record-setting performance. All four of his hits were for two bags. The only other player in WIAC history with four doubles in a single game was UW-Stout's Matt Hoeft in 2021.
- Vieth's performance was indicative of the day the Blugolds' offense had. UW-Eau Claire (4-3) pounded out 16 hits, with nine going for extra bases. The team had eight doubles collectively, breaking the previous program record of seven.
- A six-run fourth inning helped turn the tide for the Blugolds. Fredonia (5-2) led 2-1 entering that frame, but Logan Hesselman (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) hit an RBI triple and Brayton Thillman (So. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) added a two-RBI double to spark the Blugolds' rally.
- UW-Eau Claire added three more runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Vieth hit two RBI doubles in that span, and Hesselman added a run-scoring double of his own. The Blugolds led 14-2 entering the seventh.
- Fredonia put up six runs in the top of the seventh to slash the deficit to six runs, but the Blugolds tacked on three more of their own in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away. Vieth had a two-RBI double in the frame.
- Hesselman and Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) had three hits apiece for UW-Eau Claire. Hesselman had two doubles and a triple. Salyers stole one base.
- Cole Clausen (Jr. - Prior Lake, Minn.) and Dustan Green (Sr. - Prior Lake, Minn.) added two hits each for the Blugolds.
- Nicholas Meuser (So. - Burnsville, Minn.) picked up his first win of the season with six solid innings on the mound. He held Fredonia to four earned runs and struck out five.
