WINONA, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped a pair of games to St. Mary's (Minn.) on Friday in Winona. The Blugolds saw a rally fall short in a 5-4 loss in Game 1, and the Cardinals made it a sweep with a 4-3 win in 10 innings in Game 2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds (3-3) saw their late rally come up short in Game 1. St. Mary's (5-7) built a 4-0 lead through the first two innings, and UW-Eau Claire didn't break through until the fifth.
- Diego Caicedo (Sr. – Pompano Beach, Fla./Northeast) hit a two-RBI single in the top of the fifth to halve the deficit at 4-2. The Cardinals added an insurance run in the sixth, putting the Blugolds in a 5-2 hole entering the final frame.
- John DiGregorio (Fr. – Westfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) and Austin Baker (So. – Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 5-4 in the seventh, but the Blugolds stranded the tying run on base to end the game.
- Drew Salyers (Sr. – Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) had two hits in Game 1, including a double.
- UW-Eau Claire trailed 2-0 after two innings in Game 2. They got one run back on an RBI double by DiGregorio in the fourth, and later took a 3-2 lead on a two-RBI single from Brayton Thillman (So. – Eau Claire, Wis./North) in the top of the sixth.
- St. Mary's answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3, and neither team scored again until the Cardinals won the game on a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th.
