DES MOINES, Iowa (blugolds.com) – A small group of University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire track and field athletes were down in Iowa on Friday and Saturday for the prestigious Drake Relays. The weekend excursion was highlighted by a pair of school records set by
Yakob Ekoue (Gr. – Hopkins, Minn.) and
Teagan Jones (Sr. – Lake Zurich, Ill.).
Yakob Ekoue continued his historic Blugold career with a first-place finish in the men's discus and yet another career long throw of 60.16 meters. Ekoue's top throw amongst a field of 24 athletes from schools in Division I, II, and III sets the program record for long discus throw. His throw was the second longest in all divisions (college, university, and Olympic) and is the third longest in Division III history.
In a field of 24 Division I, II, and III athletes,
Teagan Jones placed fourth overall in the hammer throw with a career best throw of 59.73 meters. Her long heave on the day goes down as the longest hammer throw in program history, the top throw in Division III this year, and the 8
th longest throw in Division III history.
The men's 4x100 and 4x400 team of
Sam Piontek (Fr. – DeForest, Wis.),
Colin McClowry (Jr. – Neenah, Wis.),
Connor Jankuski (So. – Glenbeulah, Wis./Plymouth), and
Stefan Klechefski (Sr. – Roberts, Wis./River Falls) placed sixth in the first round of qualifying during the 4x100 prelims with a time of 41.24 seconds. The team of four missed the qualifying cut in the 4x400 prelims but placed a solid time of 3:17.41 for the 11
th fastest time out of the 31 teams entered.
The Blugolds will gear up for the WIAC Championships scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4 at the UW-Platteville Track & Field Complex. First events are set for 1 p.m. on Friday.
