ASHLAND, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team swept Northland College 12-4 (7 innings), 8-6 (8 innings) in a doubleheader on Wednesday at LumberJack Field.
Jacob Lacy (Sr. - Shawano, Wis.) knocked six hits across the doubleheader to help spark the Blugolds' lineup in the sweep.
Lacy went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBI in Game 1, a contest which saw five Blugolds knock multiple hits.
Carson Windeshausen (Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and
Ryan Casimier (So. - Columbia, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy) added three hits apiece, and
Walter Johnson (Jr. - Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Jack Sandvik (So. - Pewaukee, Wis.) had two hits each.
UW-Eau Claire (10-22) fell behind 3-0 after the first inning in the first game, but scored the next seven runs. The Blugolds scored twice in the second before tying the game at 3-3 on Johnson's RBI double in the fourth. Lacy put the Blugolds ahead for good with a two-RBI double in the fifth, an inning in which UW-Eau Claire scored four runs. The Blugolds sealed the deal with five runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Windeshausen.
Cole Hinkel (Jr. - Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) picked up his first win of the season on the mound. He pitched 4.2 scoreless innings of relief and struck out four.
Xavier Estrada (Jr. - Bonita Springs, Fla.) made his season debut on the mound and struck out four in two innings of relief.
The Blugolds took an early lead in Game 2, plating three runs in the second. The spurt featured an RBI double by
Drew Salyers (Jr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe). Northland tied the game with three runs in the third, but UW-Eau Claire went right back ahead in the fourth with three runs of its own after getting RBI singles from
Thomas Beardman (Fr. - Gurnee, Ill./Warrens Township) and Lacy. Northland scored once each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to force extras, but
Cade Mueller (Sr. - Coal City, Ill.) hit a two-run single in the top of the eighth to make the difference.
Ty Sagedal (So. - Burlington, Wis.) earned the victory on the mound, his first of the year.
C.J. Seville (Fr. - New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) clinched the save with a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
Lacy led the offense with two hits in Game 2. He was the only Blugold with multiple hits in the nightcap.
UW-Eau Claire is back at home on April 24 and 25, with doubleheaders scheduled against UW-Platteville each day. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. each day at Carson Park.
