EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader to UW-Platteville 9-2 and 11-4 on Saturday at Carson Park. The series finale for the four-game stint was also rescheduled on Saturday.
The series was originally scheduled to conclude on Sunday, April 28, but that doubleheader has been rescheduled to Wednesday, May 1 at 1 p.m., with both games still being played at Carson Park.
Saturday's action saw the Blugolds knock 18 hits across two games, but they couldn't cash them in for enough runs to take down the Pioneers.
Nicholas Meuser (Fr. - Burnsville, Minn.) pitched 6.1 innings and struck out nine in Game 1, but UW-Platteville used several home runs to pull ahead. The game was tied at 1-1 after
Diego Caicedo (Jr. - Pompano Beach, Fla./Northeast) hit an RBI single in the third inning, but the Pioneers took the lead for good on a two-run homer in the fourth.
Jacob Lacy (Sr. - Shawano, Wis.) answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, but the Blugolds didn't cross the plate again.
Lacy and
Drew Salyers (Jr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) led the Blugolds with two hits each in the first game.
The Pioneers jumped ahead early in Game 2, scoring once in the first inning and five times in the second. They tacked on three more runs in the fifth before the Blugolds got on the board in the bottom half of the frame on a two-run homer by Lacy. UW-Platteville scored twice more in the sixth to make it 11-2, and although the Blugolds later scored on RBIs from
Thomas Beardman (Fr. - Gurnee, Ill./Warrens Township) and
Dustan Green (Jr. - Prior Lake, Minn.), it wasn't enough.
Salyers, Beardman and
Connor Weik (So. - Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) all had two hits in Game 2, with Weik hitting two doubles.
Xavier Estrada (Jr. - Bonita Springs, Fla.) pitched four scoreless innings of relief.
The Blugolds are now off until Wednesday, when they resume the series. It will start a stretch of six games in four days to conclude the season.
