EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped its home openers to No. 11 UW-Whitewater on Saturday at Carson Park, falling to the Warhawks 17-0 and 16-5.
A five-run third inning helped the Warhawks pull away in Game 1. They hit five home runs in the contest and the Blugolds couldn't recover in a 17-0 defeat. That included two homers in the third and three more in the fifth inning.
It was to much for the Blugolds to overcome in a game where the UW-Eau Claire offense was limited to two hits.
Dustan Green (Jr. - Prior Lake, Minn.) and
Walter Johnson (Jr. - Minnetonka, Minn.) had the sole knocks for the Blugolds.
UW-Eau Claire's bats woke up in Game 2, but the highly ranked Warhawks kept up the pressure. UW-Whitewater got out to a 6-0 lead through three and a half innings before
Jacob Lacy (Sr. - Shawano, Wis.) plated the Blugolds' first run of the day with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth. Salyers added a solo homer of his own in the fifth, and Green tacked on an RBI single to make it a 7-3 deficit.
The Warhawks added two more runs in the top of the sixth before
Brayton Thillman (Fr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) hit an RBI double in the bottom half. UW-Whitewater put the game out of reach with five runs in the seventh.
Johnson had three hits in Game 2 to lead UW-Eau Claire. Lacy,
Diego Caicedo (Jr. - Pompano Beach, Fla./Northeast) and
Austin Buck (So. - Afton, Minn./Stillwater) added two hits apiece.
The series will conclude with another doubleheader on Sunday, April 14 at Carson Park. First pitch is at 12 p.m., with the team slated to celebrate Youth Day beginning at 11 a.m.
