EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team fell in the final two games of a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) series to No. 11 UW-Whitewater, 15-1 and 14-7, on Sunday at Carson Park.
The 11th-ranked Warhawks swept the series. They tallied 35 hits on Sunday across the doubleheader. UW-Eau Claire got out to a slow start in Game 1, but the offense began to hit its stride in Game 2.
UW-Whitewater built a 6-0 lead after three innings in Game 1, but broke the game open with nine runs in the top of the fifth. The Blugolds scored their only run on a solo homer from
Carson Windeshausen (Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) in the bottom of the fifth. The Warhawks' pitchers held the Blugolds to three hits in the contest.
The Warhawks scored four runs in the top of the first in Game 2 to get out to an early lead. They tacked on two more in the second before Windeshausen answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. UW-Whitewater plated two more runs in the third, and
Austin Buck (So. - Afton, Minn./Stillwater) drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the bottom half to make it 8-2.
Two more Warhawks runs scored in the fourth.
Drew Salyers (Jr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth for the Blugolds before UW-Whitewater went up by 10 in the with two runs in the sixth and another in the eighth. The Blugolds had an answer in the bottom of the eighth though, with
Cade Mueller (Sr. - Coal City, Ill.) knocking a two-RBI single and then later scoring on a balk to make it 13-7. That was as close as UW-Eau Claire would get though.
Windeshausen and
Jacob Lacy (Sr. - Shawano, Wis.) had two hits apiece to lead the Blugolds in Game 2.
UW-Eau Claire (6-20, 0-12) will look to bounce back during a four-game series at UW-Stout next weekend. The series begins Saturday, April 20, with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. in Menomonie.
