Baseball team falls in series finale at UW-Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. (blugolds.com) -- The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped the final two games of a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) series at UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, falling to the Titans 12-2 (8 innings) and 12-11. UW-Oshkosh ended the game early in the first matchup of the day, and finished off a series sweep with a walk-off win in Game 2.

Jacob Lacy (Sr. - Shawano, Wis.) highlighted the day for the Blugolds, knocking six hits across the two contests. He hit two doubles on the day and drove in a run. He had four hits in Game 2. Walter Johnson (Jr. - Minnetonka, Minn.) saw a nine-game hit streak come to an end in Game 1, but still managed to drive in three runs on the day with the help of his sixth homer of the year.

UW-Oshkosh (10-6, 4-0) built a 7-0 lead in Game 1 before UW-Eau Claire (5-11, 0-4) got on the board via a two-run home run by Drew Salyers (Jr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe). However, the Titans ended the game early by scoring five times in the bottom of the eighth.

Game 2 was back and forth, with each side trading big swings. The Blugolds ran out to a 5-0 lead by plating five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Johnson. The Titans responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the second before each team scored once in the third. UW-Oshkosh tied the game with a run in the fourth, and it remained 6-6 until the seventh inning. UW-Eau Claire broke the tie on a solo home run by Diego Caicedo (Jr. - Pompano Beach, Fla./Northeast) in the top of the seventh, but UW-Oshkosh took an 8-7 lead by scoring twice in the bottom half. The Blugolds took the lead once more after scoring four times in the top of the eighth with help from an RBI single from Salyers and a two-RBI double by Caicedo. It wouldn't last though, as the Titans scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 11 and won on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

Lacy, Johnson, Salyers and Caicedo all had multi-hit games in Game 2.

UW-Eau Claire will seek its first WIAC win of the season when it travels to UW-Stevens Point for a four-game series on April 6-7. Doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. each day at Zimmermann Field.
