STEVENS POINT, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader to UW-Stevens Point, 10-4 and 6-5.
The Blugolds out-hit the Pointers in Game 1 and were tied late in the Game 2, but weren't able to scrape out a win. They'll look to rebound in the series finale, which was moved to Monday, April 8, due to inclement weather for the original play date on Sunday, April 7.
UW-Eau Claire led 2-0 early in Game 1 with first-inning RBIs from
Drew Salyers (Jr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) and
Dustan Green (Jr. - Prior Lake, Minn.). UW-Stevens Point responded with five runs of its own across the first three frames though to make it 5-2. Salyers added another run-scoring hit in the fourth, but the Blugolds didn't score again until the seventh. The Pointers put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth.
Brennan Cohen (Jr. - Vestavia Hills, Ala.) started on the mound and worked 4.1 innings. Salyers finished with three hits, including a double. Green and
Jack Sandvik (So. - Pewaukee, Wis.) had a pair of hits.
Cade Mueller (Sr. - Coal City, Ill.) hit a sac fly in the fifth inning of Game 2 to tie the game at 1-1. The Pointers regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Blugolds made it a tie again when Salyers scored on a steal and Mueller drove in another run in the seventh. However, the Pointers tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh and UW-Eau Claire couldn't recover.
Diego Caicedo (Jr. - Pompano Beach, Fla./Northeast) hit a two-RBI single in the eighth, but the Blugolds couldn't get any closer.
Salyers scored three runs in Game 2.
Nicholas Meuser (Fr. - Burnsville, Minn.) started and pitched 4.2 innings, holding the Pointers to two earned runs.
Draza Dupor (Fr. - Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) pitched 3.1 innings of relief.
The series will resume Monday, April 8, at 12 p.m. in Stevens Point.
