WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team went 3-0 to win Pool B on the opening day of the Budd Whitehill National Duals at Lycoming College on Friday.
Tristan Massie (Sr. – Hillsdale, Wis./Barron) and
Tyler Fleetwood (Sr. – Fulton, Ill.) both earned the 100
th victories of their college careers during the Blugolds' first dual of the day.
No. 8 UW-Eau Claire is the defending champion at the Budd Whitehill National Duals and has a chance to defend its title on the second day of action. The Blugolds advanced to the championship round by going unbeaten in pool play.
The Blugolds opened the day with a dominant win over Williams College, defeating the Ephs 49-0. Fleetwood got his 100
th win thanks to a forfeit at 133 pounds. It was the 77
th win of his Blugold career and 100
th overall as a college wrestler. Massie, ranked 10
th at 165 pounds, knocked off No. 7 Henry Forte by 6-3 decision to pick up his 100
th victory and move to No. 10 on UW-Eau Claire's all-time leaderboard. In all, the Blugolds earned two pins, three technical falls and a major decision to blank Williams.
UW-Eau Claire followed with a 35-7 victory over Cortland in their second dual. The Blugolds won eight of 10 matches, with their only two losses coming against ranked wrestlers.
Jared Stricker (Jr. – Ashland, Wis.) won by pin, and Fleetwood and
Connor Collins (Sr. – Oshkosh, Wis./West) both won by technical falls.
Drew Kested (Serling, Ill.) and Massie both picked up major decisions.
The Blugolds' final dual match saw them prevail 50-0 over Messiah to clinch Pool B.
Zach Sato (Jr. – Oswego, Ill.), Stricker,
Ian Pepple (Fr. – Hastings, Minn.) and
Sloan Welch (Fr. – Arpin, Wis./Auburndale) all won by pin. Stricker's pin was the 47
th of his career and moved him up to second on the Blugolds' all-time pins leaderboard. UW-Eau Claire also had two technical falls and a major decision against Messiah.
By going 3-0 in its pool, UW-Eau Claire advanced to the championship group at the tournament. The eighth-ranked Blugolds will wrestle No. 18 Roanoke in the tournament semifinals at 9:30 a.m. Central on Saturday.
