Blugolds win 8-Man Battles for 4th straight season

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team hosted the 8-Man Battles and 8-Woman Battles on Saturday at the McPhee Center. The eighth-ranked Blugolds won the event for the fourth consecutive season, producing 14 individual champions to clinch the crown.

The Blugolds racked up 148 team points to cruise to the title. Augustana was the runner-up at 86.5. It was also the first time UW-Eau Claire had ever hosted a women's wrestling tournament.

UW-Eau Claire had the winner in eight of the 10 Gold Division men's brackets. Carter Schulz (So. – Rice Lake, Wis.) was the 125-pound champion after four victories, including two by fall. He defeated teammate Travis Moelter (Fr. – River Falls, Wis.) in his final match, with Moelter taking second at 125.

Top-ranked Tyler Fleetwood (Sr. – Fulton, Ill.) was the 133-pound champion. He won by fall in the quarterfinals, technical fall in the semis and by fall again in the finals. Ryan Goddard (So. – Oswego, Ill.) placed fourth at 133.

The Blugolds had one wrestler place in the top four at 141. Drew Kested (So. – Sterling, Ill.) finished as the runner-up in that division.

Landon Church (Fr. – Jordan, Minn./Scott West) was the 149-pound winner. He advanced to the finals via bye and injury default, and won his only match of the day by 9-7 decision.

Colton Sund (Jr. – Prior Lake, Minn.) emerged unscathed to win the 157-pound bracket. He advanced through the semifinals by major decision, and defeated teammate Jan Hernandez-Soto (Jr. – Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry) by major decision in the finals.

Jon Harvey (So. – Lake City, Minn./Lincoln) took first at 165 pounds. He posted four wins on the day, including three via fall.

Preston Carlisle (So. – Red Wing, Minn./Cannon Falls) placed first at 174 pounds. He won his quarterfinal match by fall and his semifinal by decision to advance to the finals. He was due to face second-ranked Jared Stricker (Jr. – Ashland, Wis.) in the finals, but Stricker submitted a medical forfeit.

The 184-pound bracket played out similarly to 174 pounds, with two Blugolds sweeping the top spots. Connor Collins (Sr. – Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) and 10th-ranked Niall Schoenfelder (Jr. – Antioch, Ill.) both reached the finals, before Schoenfelder submitted a medical forfeit, giving Collins a first-place finish.

Ian Pepple (Fr. – Hastings, Minn.) took second at 197 and Cole Matulenko (Fr. – Libertyville, Ill.) placed third. Pepple went 3-1 on the day and Matulenko went 2-2.

Jackson Schichel (Sr. – Hastings, Minn.) was the 285-pound champion. He won twice by fall and once by medical forfeit to advance to the finals, where he met teammate Sloan Welch (Fr. – Arpin, Wis./Auburndale). Welch won by three straight pins to reach the finals. Schichel earned first place with a sudden victory over Welch in overtime.

The Blugolds also had six champions in the flights divisions. Chris Cushman (Fr. – Wabasha, Minn./Wabasha-Kellogg) took first at 125 pounds, winning all four of his matches by fall. Jake Matthews (Jr. – Addison Trail, Ill.) won twice at 149 pounds to place first. Tristan Drier (Fr. – Cadott, Wis.) took first at 165 pounds with three straight victories by pin. Brandon Meister (Fr. – Spooner, Wis.) won the 174-pound flight with four straight victories. Terry Smith (So. – Tacoma, Wash./Curtis) was the 184-pound flight champion after three consecutive pins. Charles Gierke (Jr. – Hudson, Wis.) won three times to capture the 197-pound title.

Victor Perez Mesa (So. – Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center), Ethan Struck (Fr. – Marengo, Ill./Marian Central Catholic), Ryan Lexvold (Fr. – Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa), Liam Speich (Fr. – Evansville, Wis.), Marcus Hankins (Sr. – Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Ryder Depies (Fr. – Merrill, Wis.) were all placewinners in the flights division.

UW-Eau Claire will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 21. The eighth-ranked Blugolds host top-ranked Augsburg (Minn.) at 4 p.m. at the McPhee Center. Augsburg is the defending national champion.
