OSHKOSH, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team dominated UW-Oshkosh 49-6 on Wednesday to retain its Chancellor's Cup title. The eighth-ranked Blugolds won three times by pin and twice by technical fall to handily win their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener.
It was the second year in a row the Blugolds won the Chancellor's Cup against UW-Oshkosh, and marked UW-Eau Claire's fourth win in its last five meetings with the Titans.
The Blugolds won three matches by forfeit, with
Ryan Goddard (So. - Oswego, Ill.),
Jon Harvey (So. - Lake City, Minn./Lincoln) and
Preston Carlisle (So. - Red Wing, Minn./Cannon Falls) all earning points without an opponent to wrestle.
The dual began at 125 pounds, where
Carter Schulz (So. - Rice Lake, Wis.) got the Blugolds off to a strong start. He wasted little time in getting UW-Eau Claire in front, pinning his opponent in just 1:44 to open the competition with a bang.
The Titans forfeited at 133, bringing up the 141-pound match.
Jayden Sheppard (Fr. - Neenah, Wis.) wrestled for the Blugolds, falling via pin late in the first period.
Landon Church (Fr. - Jordan, Minn./Scott West) took the mat at 149 pounds for UW-Eau Claire, and started a run of seven straight victories for the Blugolds. He won via fall in only 1:01.
Jan Hernandez-Soto (Jr. - Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry) wrestled at 157 pounds for the Blugolds. He had no trouble at all, racking up point after point en route to an 18-3 technical fall in the second period.
Harvey and Carlisle won by forfeit at 165 and 174, respectively, bringing up
Connor Collins (Sr. - Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) at 184. He continued an impressive run for the Blugolds, pinning his foe in the first period.
Ryder Depies (Fr. - Merrill, Wis.) got the Blugolds' second technical fall of the night, doing so at 197 pounds. He finished his match with an 18-3 score in the third period.
Jackson Schichel (Sr. - Hastings, Minn.) finished off the dual with a victory at 285 pounds. He prevailed by 10-3 decision.
The Blugolds will be back at home this weekend for the 8-Man Battles and 8-Woman Battle tournaments. The men's tournament begins at 10 a.m. at the McPhee Center, with the women's event beginning at 11 a.m. It is the first time UW-Eau Claire has ever hosted a women's wrestling tournament.
