Julia Baranek Leads Outdoor Track & Field Teams on Day Two of Nationals

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Blugolds.com) – Julia Baranek (Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) took third place and tied a school record in the high jump to lead the UW-Eau Claire men's and women's outdoor track & field teams on day two of the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships today.

Julia Baranek claimed All-American honors in the high jump with a height of 1.73 meters (5-8) to tie a school record with Arlene Meinholz, who achieved the mark on both April 23, 1994 and May 27, 1995.

In the men's hammer throw, Tyler Genovese (Sr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) finished in fifth place with a distance of 60 meters (196-10) to win All-American status. Tony Sigrist (Sr.-Byron, Minn.) finished the event in 10th place with a mark of 55.93 meters (183-6).

In other final events, Michelle Baranek (Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) came in 11th place in the heptathlon with 4,494 points while Bart Mestelle (Jr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) took 13th in the decathlon with 6,487 points, a new school record. The previous school record of 6,389 was set by Andrew Storsveen on May 27, 2011.

In preliminary events, the Blugolds competed in five events but just one individual advanced to the finals.

Thurgood Dennis (Fr.-Allouez, Wis./Green Bay Notre Dame) had the eighth fastest time in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 10.63 seconds. He will compete in the finals Saturday at 4:10 p.m. (Pacific).

In the men's 400-meter dash, Jacob Dennis-Oehling (So.-Whitewater, Wis.) took 13th with a time of 49.11 seconds while Cody Prince (Fr.-Appleton, Wis./North) was 14th with a time of 49.16.

In women's events, Kim Miresse (Sr.-Waukesha, Wis./North) was 12th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.43 seconds while Talisa Emberts (Sr.-Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) was 16th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.73 seconds. In the 100-meter dash, Jordanne Greenup (Sr.-Fridley, Minn.) came in 21st with a time of 12.27 seconds.

In the team standings, the Blugold men are in sixth place with 12 points while the women are tied for 14th with six points.

Saturday the championships will conclude. The Blugolds will compete in 11 events. Action is set to get underway at 12:30 p.m. (Pacific).
