Softball Undefeated After Day One of WIAC Tournament

OSHKOSH, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire softball team picked up two wins on day one of the double-elimination Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament at Oshkosh today.

The Blugolds opened the day with an 8-7 win over UW-Oshkosh while defeating UW-Whitewater 2-1 later in the day. The win over Whitewater ended the Warhawks' eight game winning streak.

Eau Claire is now set to face UW-La Crosse on Sunday at 9 a.m. The Eagles also went undefeated on Saturday, defeating UW-River Falls and UW-Superior. UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater will face each other tomorrow at 9 a.m. in an elimination contest as both schools lost once Saturday. A complete schedule can be found on the WIAC Tournament website.

In game one, while the Blugolds went up 3-0 after the first inning, UW-Oshkosh took a 7-4 lead by the fifth inning. With the Blugolds down heading into the seventh inning, Jess Freagon (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) gave the Blugolds momentum with a three-run homer to tie the game at seven apiece. Later in the inning, Kaity Acker (Jr.-Cross Plains, Wis./Middleton) reached on an error, allowing Emily Haluska (Fr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) to score the winning run.

Katie Stalker (Sr.-Madison, Wis./La Follette) led the Blugolds with two runs while Emily Muller (So.-Lancaster, Wis.), Jenny Hess (Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln), Nikki Bromelkamp (So.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) and Tamara Zeman (Sr.-Lodi, Wis.) each scored once. Stalker and Sara Baumgartner (Jr.-Arcadia, Wis.) each had three hits while the Blugolds finished with 11 for the game.

In game two, Baumgartner scored in the second inning while Hess scored in the fourth to give the Blugolds the 2-0 lead. Whitewater scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh after an Eau Claire throwing error with just one out. However, the Blugolds held strong, throwing out the next batter while striking out the following batter to end the game on top. Aleisha Harper (So.-Mondovi, Wis./Eau Claire North) led the Blugolds with two of the team's seven hits while Freagon finished with a game-best two RBIs.

In the circle, Ashley Meinen (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) started both games while Kassie Krummel (Fr.-Walcott, Iowa/Durant) finished both. Meinen pitched four innings in the first game and struck out one batter but Krummel earned the win after pitching three innings and striking out two batters. Meinen pitched five innings in game two and struck out two batters to earn the win. Krummel pitched the final two innings to earn the save, her seventh of the season to improve on the school record she owns.
