Wirtz Wins National Title on Day Two of NCAA Championships

BEREA, Ohio (Blugolds.com) - Chris Wirtz (Sr.-Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) won a national title to lead the Blugolds on day two of the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College today.

Wirtz recorded the win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:56.20. Coming into the race, he held the top time in the nation, which he achieved last week at the La Crosse Last Chance Meet, but improved on that time today. His national's time is a school record and a facility record, breaking the old facility record of 8:58.04 set by Augustana College's Sandu Rebencluc in 1993.

The individual national title also helped the Blugold men's team improve their overall position to fifth place out of 39 teams that have scored points.

Two Blugold women also competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Hannah Humbach (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Abundant Life) led the pair as she finished with All-American honors in fourth place with a time of 10:40.18. Alyssa Sybilrud (So.-Savage, Minn./Burnsville) took 16th place as she came in with a time of 11:06.57.

Also on the women's side, Brittany Frederick (So.-Green Bay, Wis./Preble) competed in the shot put but did not advance past preliminaries as she recorded a toss of 11.62 meters (38-1.5).

As a team, the Blugold women are tied for eighth place.

Tomorrow the championships will conclude and the women will compete in two more events. Frederick will compete in the discus throw, an event she currently holds the second best mark in the nation this year, while Humbach will compete in the 5,000-meter run.
