Softball Wins Two against UW-Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire softball team defeated UW-Platteville twice today, winning 12-1 in five innings in game one and 9-3 in game two at the UWP Softball Complex today.

Eau Claire is now 19-17 on the season and 11-3 in conference play. UW-Platteville falls to 10-26 overall and 0-14 in the conference.

In game one, the Blugolds scored runs in every inning to end the game early. Platteville scored just one run in the bottom of the second off a homer by Brittany Caley.

Emily Muller (So.-Lancaster, Wis.) recorded her second home run of the season in the top of the third inning, bringing in Aleisha Harper (So.-Mondovi, Wis./Eau Claire North) and Katie Stalker (Sr.-Madison, Wis./La Follette), who led the game with four runs. Harper added three runs while Muller had two.

Also scoring runs for the Blugolds were Jess Freagon (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell), Sara Baumgartner (Jr.-Arcadia, Wis.) and Emily Haluska (Fr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH). Bekki Kidnie (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Johnson) had four of the Blugolds' 16 hits. The 16 hits tied a season-high while the Blugolds finished with 12 RBIs, the second most they have accumulated in a game this year.

In game two, the Blugolds fell behind early after allowing two runs in the first, coming from a home run. Eau Claire came on strong at the end scoring three runs between the third and sixth innings and six runs in the final inning.

After Jenny Hess (Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) and Stalker scored runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to tie the game, Baumgartner hit her first home run of the season to give the Blugolds the edge in the sixth inning. While the Pioneers tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth, a six-run inning in the seventh helped the Blugolds secure the 9-3 win.

Baumgartner led Eau Claire in game two with two runs and three hits while she tied Stalker to lead the team with two RBIs.

Ashley Meinen (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) and Kassie Krummel (Fr.-Walcott, Iowa/Durant) both pitched complete games to earn wins, with Meinen throwing in game one and Krummel pitching in game two. Meinen had four strikeouts while Krummel finished with a career-high eight strikeouts, which also is a season-high for the Blugolds this year.

The Blugolds will face UW-La Crosse tomorrow at noon to wrap up the regular season. The Eagles won the conference title, the first one in program history, after defeating UW-Superior twice today. La Crosse comes into the contest with the Blugolds with a 14-0 WIAC record.
