Men's Track & Field Competes in Three Meets

WINONA, Minn. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's outdoor track and field team had a busy weekend, sending competitors to three separate meets. All three produced positive results for the Blugolds.

On Friday, at the 2010 Drake Relays at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa the 4x800 meter relay of Adam Flyte (Sr.-Fort Atkinson, Wis.), Wes Fischer (Sr.-Rosemount, Minn.), Jake Zander (Jr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) and Paul Hetke (Fr.-Chetek, Wis.) placed tenth with a time of 7:51.32.

On Saturday, the team sent most competitors to the St. Mary's Open, while a handful also competed Friday and Saturday at Hillsdale College in the Gina Relays.

At the St. Mary's Invite, on the track, the Blugolds boasted eight top three finishers. In the 400-meter hurdles, Corrie Floyd (Sr.-Whitewater, Wis.) placed first in his section with a time of 55.48. Dan Koenig (Sr.-Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) placed second in his section with a time of 58.95, while Patrick Keyes (Jr.-Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) finished third in his section in 56.52. Aaron Easker (Fr.-Eland, Wis./Wittenberg-Birnamwood ) placed third in his section of the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:01.14. In the 200-meter dash, Aaron McDonough (Fr.-Waunakee, Wis.) finished third in his section with a time of 23.23.

In the field, Kirk Schmidt (Jr.-Athens, Wis.) placed first in his section of the long jump with a leap of 6.58 meters. Jon Gillespie (Fr.-Altoona, Wis.) took second in his section with a jump of 6.53 meters. In the discus throw, Tyler Genovese (So.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) placed third in his section with a toss of 47.74 meters.

Meanwhile, at the Gina Relays, the team had three individuals place in the top ten. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Chris Wirtz (Sr.-Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) placed sixth with a time of 9:12.95. In the 10,000-meter run, Tom Breitbach (So.-Muskego, Wis.) placed eighth with a time of 30:39.59, while Kevin Hall (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Preble) finished in tenth with a time of 30:46.73.

The team is off until next Saturday when it competes in the Oshkosh Open. Events are set to begin at noon.
