Box Score 2 FOREST PARK, Ill. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire softball team wrapped up its spring break trip with two wins against Dominican University (Ill.) today.
Eau Claire won game one 5-4 while picking up a 5-1 victory in game two. The Blugolds are now 5-11 on the season while Dominican drops to 9-5.
While Dominican went ahead in the first inning with one run in the first game, Eau Claire took the lead in the top of the next inning and never looked back. Sara Baumgartner (Jr.-Arcadia, Wis.) and Jess Freagon (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) each scored in the second after Katie Stalker (Sr.-Madison, Wis./La Follette) doubled to left field.
Freagon scored another run in the fourth inning and hit a home run, the second of her collegiate career, in the fifth inning to drive in Jenny Hess (Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln). The Blugolds found themselves up 5-1 at the end of the fifth and while Dominican scored three runs in the sixth, Eau Claire held on for the win.
In game two, Hess and Tamara Zeman (Sr.-Lodi, Wis.) scored runs in the first and second innings, respectively, to give the Blugolds a 2-0 lead. Dominican cut the lead to one after a home run in the fourth inning but Eau Claire added three runs in the top of the seventh to help secure the 5-1 win. Ainsley Klar (Sr.-La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas), Freagon and Emily Haluska (Fr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) all scored in the inning.
Both teams had three errors on the day. The Blugolds had 22 hits, including 16 in game two, a season-high. Stalker led the Blugolds with a total of five hits in the two games while she and Freagon each had three RBIs. Dominican had 13 hits for the day.
In the circle, Ashley Meinen (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) earned the win in game one and Kassie Krummel (Fr.-Walcott, Iowa/Durant) recorded the win in game two. Krummel also picked up a save in the first game while Jess Hegseth (Fr.-Zumbrota , Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa ) was credited with a save in game two. Meinen and Krummel each struck out three batters and Hegseth struck out two.
The Blugolds will be at home for the first time this season next Wednesday (April 7) when they face Saint Mary's University (Minn.) in a doubleheader. Action is set to get underway at 4 p.m. at Gelein Field.
