MARIETTA, Ohio - Chris Wirtz (Jr.-Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) set a new school record as he took fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on day two of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Marietta College.
After breaking the school record just one week ago by one second to earn his way to nationals, Wirtz set a new school record today, breaking is previous record by almost five seconds. He finished with a time of 9:03.95 as he took fourth out of 16 runners to earn All-American honors. Last week when he set the record he finished with a time of 9:08.23.
Also competing today was Wes Fischer (Jr.-Rosemount, Minn.) in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run. After taking second in his heat with a time of 1:50.75, he automatically qualified for the finals which will be contested tomorrow. Fischer, along with the 4x400-meter relay team, will compete tomorrow on the final day of the championship.
The Blugolds are currently tied for ninth following the second day of nationals.
