WINONA, Minn. - The UW-Eau Claire men's track and field team took second place out of seven teams today at the Phil Esten Challenge and also competed at the Kansas Relays at the University of Kansas.
The Blugold men finished the day with a score of 145.50, coming behind UW-La Crosse with a score of 256.50. Third place went to UW-Stout with a score of 127.50 while UW-River Falls took fourth with a score of 114. Fifth place went to St. Mary's which scored 20 points, sixth place went to Minnesota with a score of 11 and seventh place went to the Wisconsin Track Club with a score of two.
Overall the Blugolds had nine finishes of third or better, with four getting first place.
Dan Powers (Jr.-New Richmond, Wis.) led the Blugolds in finishes with a first place finish in the long jump competition with a distance of 6.46 meters (21-2 1/2) while also taking second place in the triple jump with a distance of 13.30 meters (43-7 3/4).
The Blugolds' Chris Kupfer (Sr.-Germantown, Wis.) took first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.67 seconds while the 4x400-meter relay also took first place with a time of 3:21.79. Andy Warren (Sr.-Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) also took first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:44.41.
Sam Johnson (Sr.-Deer Park, Wis./Amery) took second place in the shot put competition with a distance of 14.86 meters (48-9), while Joe Lilek (Fr.-Tomahawk, Wis.) followed closely in third place with a distance of 14.50 meters (47-7).
Jake Zander (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) took third place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.62 while Corrie Floyd (Jr.-Whitewater, Wis.) also grabbed the third spot in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.58.
In the competitions in the Kansas Relays, the 4x400-meter relay team of Tim Braunschweig (Jr.-Mukwonago, Wis.), Patrick Mackin (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy), Justin White (Jr.-Arcadia, Wis.) and Kupfer took 12th place out of 28 teams with a time of 3:18.70.
The Blugolds will continue competition at the Kansas Relays tomorrow.
