EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - For the 18th consecutive season, the UW-La Crosse men's track and field team claimed the conference outdoor crown at the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Simpson Field today.
La Crosse took first in the nine-team field with 191.5 points. Stevens Point came in second with 137.5, while Oshkosh finished in a close third with 134.5 points. Whitewater took home fourth place, scoring 129 points and Platteville scored 87 for fifth. Eau Claire took sixth place with 67.5 points, while River Falls scored 53 for a seventh place finish. Stout and Superior finished in eighth and ninth with point totals of 42 and 16, respectively.
La Crosse's Alex Rooker was named Track Athlete of the Meet, while Dan Hytinen of Whitewater claimed Field Athlete of the Meet honors. Nick Ver Duin of Stevens Point and Scott Michel of Oshkosh were named WIAC Max Sparger Co-Scholar-Athletes.
In the day's first event, the 10,000-meter run, La Crosse dominated, taking the top five spots. Cory Hayden won the event with a time of 31:12.78. John Heitzman placed second with a time of 31:24.83, while Connor Lonning was third with a time of 31:33.10.
In the javelin throw, River Falls' Charlie Sowa threw for a distance of 164-10 to take first place. RJ Soderman of Whitewater finished in second with a distance of 154-02 and Oshkosh's Phil Prusinski threw a distance of 150-01 for a third place spot.
The long jump was won by Stevens Point's Keith Ingram with a distance of 22-04 1/4. Logan Koerten of Eau Claire was second in the event with a leap of 22-0 3/4. Whitewater's Tyler Eddy came in third in the long jump with a distance of 21-11.
Al Oleson of Eau Claire won the shot put today with a provisional qualifying throw of 51-01 1/2. La Crosse's Bobby Riley took second with a throw of 50-10 1/4, while Whitewater's Dan Hytinen was third with throw of 49-11 3/4.
In the triple jump, La Crosse's Jessie Densavang took first with a distance of 48-03 1/4. James Simms of Oshkosh took second with a jump of 46-06 3/4 and Anthony Hasse finished in third with a jump of 46-02 1/2. All three times were NCAA Division III provisional qualifying finishes.
The high jump was led by La Crosse's Clark Lundquist with a leap of 6-06 1/4. Oshkosh's Billy Klitz took second with the same height and Stevens Point's Kyle Steiner finished in third place with a jump of 6-04 1/4.
Whitewater's Dan Hytinen took home the championship in the discus throw with an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying distance of 190-10. The throw also marked a facility and WIAC record. Sean Larson of Stout finished in second with a throw of 164-11, while Oshkosh's Tony Baker threw 156-09 for a third place finish. Both the second and third place distances were provisional qualifying throws.
In the 4x100-meter relay, Stevens Point won the event with a provisional qualifying time of 41.61. La Crosse finished in second with a time of 42.30, while Whitewater completed the race in third with a time of 42.35.
The 1,500-meter run was led by Platteville's Tyler Sigl, who won the race with a time of 3:56.41. Superior's Matt Kramer finished right behind Sigl with a time of 3:56.63. In third was Kyle Stangel from Platteville with a time of 3:58.57.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Whitewater's Jon Schellin took the top spot with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14.71. Platteville's Ben Zizis took second in the event with a run of 15 seconds, while Stout's Eric Wheeler finished third with a time of 15.06.
In the 400-meter dash, La Crosse's David Kolbe won with a provisional qualifying time of 48.50, followed by Stevens Point's Patrick Leonard from Stevens Point with a time of 48.89. La Crosse's Dylan Randolph finished in third with a time of 49.38.
Alex Rooker and Matt Gordy of La Crosse finished first and second in the 100-meter dash. Rooker completed the race with a time of 10.80, while Gordy finished in 10.85. Platteville's Matt Bischoff took third in the race with a time of 10.89.
Rooker also took home the championship in the 200-meter dash. He finished with a time of 21.85. Matt Bischoff of Platteville and Patrick Leonard of Stevens Point took second and third, respectively, with times of 21.93 and 21.96.
In the 800-meter run, Stevens Point's Greg Haak took the top spot with a time of 1:56.40. La Crosse's Andrew Boldt finished in second with a time of 1:56.62 and Whitewater's Aron Kehoe took third with a finish of 1:56.79.
The 400-meter hurdles were led by Oshkosh's Ben Zill, taking the championship with a time of 53.36. Keith Martineau of Whitewater finished in second with a time of 53.50, while Eau Claire's Brian Christ took third with a time of 53.84. All three times were NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times.
Platteville's Tyler Sigl won the 5,000-meter relay with a time of 14:49.73. Andrew McGuire of Oshkosh took second in the event with a time of 14:51.03, while La Crosse's Kevin Oelstrom was third with a time of 14:54.40.
In the 4x400 relay, La Crosse took home the first place finish with a time of 3:16.88, an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. Stevens Point finished in second, completing the relay in 3:17.61. Oshkosh finished with a time of 3:18.33 to take third in the event.
Winning the decathlon with a facility record and an NCAA provisional qualifying score was Stevens Point's Kyle Steiner, taking the event with 6,455 points. Alex Wahlberg of River Falls finished in second with 5,926, while Stevens Point's Mike Delleman finished with 5,846.
