Volleyball Opens Sandy Schumacher Tournament with Sweep Over Edgewood

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (www.blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball team held their home opener on Friday evening during as they hosted the 13th annual Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament at the Sonnentag Event Center. UW-Eau Claire defeated Edgewood University 3-0, winning by set scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-12. The Blugolds hit .242 with 37 kills while holding the Eagles to a .000 hitting percentage. UW-Eau Claire added 11 total blocks, six service aces and 44 digs in the win. The team achieved a season high of 11 blocks in the game.

The Blugolds took the opening set 25-16, finishing with 12 kills while the Eagles had eight kills and 11 combined attack and service errors. Mya Cinnamo, Brynlee Major and Norah Erickson each recorded three kills, and Makina Larson closed the set with a kill off a Hannah Thole assist.

UWEC won the second set 25-14, using a late 6-0 run from 18-12 to 24-12 that included five straight service points by Alia Schlimgen. The Blugolds recorded nine kills and were credited with blocks on eight points, while the Eagles finished with seven kills, 11 attack errors and three service errors in the set.

In the third set, UW-Eau Claire took a 25-12 win, finishing with a 16-7 edge in kills and three service aces. Mya Cinnamo and Larson each had four kills in the set, while Natalie Murphy accounted for four of the Eagles' seven kills. The Blugolds closed from 18-11 by winning seven of the final eight rallies.

Mya Cinnamo led the Blugolds with nine kills while hitting .429 and added three block assists. Larson finished with eight kills on 10 attacks, hitting .700. Lili Hagg recorded a team-high seven blocks, including two solo blocks, and added three kills. Rachel Johnson tallied five kills, three service aces and 10 digs.

UWEC improves to a 3-1 overall record and Edgewood suffers their first lost of the season and are now 3-1 overall.

Up next, the Blugolds host Coe College and St. Catherine Univeristy as the Sandy Schumacher Tournament continues on Saturday, Sept. 12. Games times are set for noon and 4:00 p.m. at The Sonnentag Event Center in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
