WHITEWATER, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (21-21, 14-14 WIAC) fell to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (38-4, 28-0 WIAC) in a narrow 9–8 defeat on Friday at Prucha Field. Despite a five-run surge in the fourth inning, UW-Eau Claire could not overcome UW-Whitewater's early offensive advantage. This loss marks the end of the Blugolds' season, capping off their best season since the program's return.
UW-Whitewater clinched the game in the bottom of the ninth when Keli Grennier's single set the stage for Hudson Turner's RBI single, securing a narrow victory. This final sequence came after the Blugolds and UW-Whitewater traded leads throughout the game, showcasing a tense and competitive matchup.
The Blugolds had a pivotal fourth inning, scoring five runs.
Logan Hesselman started the rally with a walk, followed by
Kellen Smith's double.
Diego Caicedo's double drove in two runs, and
Austin Buck's three-RBI double further fueled the surge. Despite these efforts, the Blugolds' offensive momentum tapered in the later innings, with several opportunities left uncapitalized.
In the seventh inning, UWEC added a run to tie the game at eight. Hesselman's ground-rule double was converted into a run on Caicedo's single. However, the inability to maintain the lead and late-inning defensive miscues, including a critical error in the seventh, ultimately allowed UW-Whitewater to clinch the game in the final inning.
Sebastian De la Toba started on the mound for UW-Eau Claire, pitching 2 innings and allowing 5 earned runs on 5 hits, with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Evan Fischer took over in relief, delivering a solid 5 innings, giving up only 1 earned run, 3 hits, and striking out 3 batters while issuing 3 walks.
Aaron Skrypek closed out the game, pitching 1 1/3 innings and surrendering 1 earned run on 3 hits. Despite the efforts of the bullpen, the team faced challenges early in the game with 4 wild pitches from De la Toba in his brief outing.
Buck collected three RBIs, contributing significantly to the team's scoring. Caicedo matched Buck with three RBIs and added two hits.
Eli Keirstead hit a home run and recorded two RBIs, providing a critical offensive boost. Hesselman scored twice and drew two walks, effectively reaching base.
The Blugolds finish the year with an overall record of 21-21 and a 14-14 conference record.
