ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire secured a 1-0 victory over Macalester College on Wednesday at Macalester Stadium. The decisive goal from
Alek Laroi came in the first half, leading to a clean sheet performance by the Blugolds defense, which allowed only two shots without any on target. UWEC's goalkeeper did not record a save, as the team maintained a defensive stronghold throughout the match.
The first half commenced with the Blugolds initiating offensive pressure, marked by an early shot attempt by
Carson Kowalski. The visitors continued to test the Scots' defense, with
Owen Williams and
Noah Malcook recording additional shots. Despite a strong defensive effort from the Scots, UW-Eau Claire persisted in their attack.
Alek Laroi broke the deadlock in the 39th minute, netting a half volley from outside the 18-yard box to give the Blugolds a 1-0 advantage. The team maintained their momentum through a series of corner kicks, concluding the half with a lead. The score stood at 1-0 in favor of UWEC as the first half ended.
The second half began with UW-Eau Claire maintaining a strong offensive stance, highlighted by multiple corner kick opportunities at 54' and 58', though unable to convert these chances into goals. Despite a series of fouls from both teams, UW-Eau Claire's
Tavin Ferner managed a shot on goal in the 74th minute, which was saved by the Scots' goalkeeper.
As the half progressed, the Blugolds continued to press with another corner kick in the 86th minute, but the score remained unchanged. The half concluded with UW-Eau Claire holding onto their 1-0 lead, demonstrating a solid defensive performance to secure the victory.
Laroi scored the game-winning goal for the Blugolds, with his single shot volley finding the back of the net.
Charlie Mroz secured the shutout in goal, playing the full 90 minutes without allowing a score and facing two shots. Mroz improves his record to 3-2-1 on the year. Malcook contributed offensively with two shots, one of which was on target. Ferner also added a shot on goal to the team's efforts.
Eau Claire improved to 4-2-1 overall after the victory. The Scots dropped to 5-3-0 overall.
The Blugolds will head back on the road on Sunday, September 28 when they travel to Beloit, Wis. and face off with Beloit College. Opening kick off is scheduled for 1p.m. at Strong Complex Field.
