DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's and women's track and field teams competed at the prestigious Drake Relays on Friday at Drake Stadium. The Blugolds found success in relay events and throwing events on their first day at one of the largest meets in the country.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugold men and women had two relays apiece compete in preliminaries on Friday. All four groups — 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays on each side — advanced to Saturday's finals.
- The Blugolds also had several throwers competing. Yakob Ekoue (Sr. - Hopkins, Minn.) had the top showing when he placed second in the men's elite discus competition with a throw of 60.25 meters. He finished only behind Mitchell Weber, who competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials last year.
- In the men's elite shot put competition, Adam Strouf (Sr. - Rice Lake, Wis.) had a toss of 17.73 meters to take fifth. He finished behind four NCAA Division I throwers, including three from the Big Ten Conference.
- In the women's university discus event, Kayla Behnke (Sr. - Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) was 17th while Teagan Jones (Sr. - Lake Zurich, Ill.) was 20th.
- In the men's university shot put, Ekoue took eighth and Gage Stankiewicz (Sr. - Esko, Minn.) took 15th.

The meet wraps up on Saturday, April 26. The Blugolds will compete in the relay finals and have more throwers in action.
