WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire softball team split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader with No. 25 UW-Stevens Point on Saturday at Rapids Area Sports Complex. The Blugolds upended the Pointers 7-6 in the first game before dropping the second 4-0 in their first WIAC games of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Eau Claire (19-7, 1-1) overturned a two-run deficit to defeat the Pointers (22-4, 1-1) in Game 1.
- After the Pointers opened up a 3-1 lead through two innings, Molly Marquardt (So. - Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) blasted a two-run homer to tie the game in the third.
- The Blugolds took the lead for good on a solo homer from Hailey Hagedorn (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) in the sixth. They tacked on key insurance runs on an RBI single from Haylie Schmidt (So. - Black River Falls, Wis.) and a two-RBI double by Norah Kutnink (So. - Winneconne, Wis.) in the top of the seventh.
- The Pointers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Emma Sather (Sr. - Chetek, Wis./Chetek-Weyerhaeuser) slammed the door to earn the save.
- Claire Beck (Sr. - Jefferson, Wis.) earned the victory in the circle with 6.2 innings of work. She struck out three.
- Marquardt, Hagedorn and Paige Lathrop (Jr. - South Milwaukee, Wis.) all had two hits in Game 1.
- The Pointers held the Blugolds to three hits in a shutout in Game 2. UW-Eau Claire got a runner into scoring position twice, but the Pointers thwarted them both times.
- UW-Stevens Point scored twice in the fourth and twice in the sixth.
- Jacie Schultz (Sr. - Lake Crystal, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial) pitched a complete game and held the Pointers to two earned runs.

The Blugolds continue WIAC play when they host UW-La Crosse for a doubleheader on April 16 at Bollinger Fields. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
